How can I make my own Baby Rice Cereal?

I plan to breastfeed exclusively the first year, but was wondering how to make my own Baby Rice Cereal. I'm sure it's quite simple...just haven't figured out how to do it! By the way, I do have a VitaMix and I have processed Rice into Rice Flour before with this machine. Thanks in advance!

Yes! It won't be instant like the gerber stuff but it is healthier! You use brown rice. Whirl it in your vitamix or a clean coffee grinder until is is fine. It will look like cream of wheat sort of. Then to cook I bring about a cup of water to a boil. Whisk in a few tablespoons and when it returns to boiling I turn the heat down to low (or 2 on my range) and cover. Cook for 15 minutes stirring occasionally. You can refrigerate it for a few days too. I make a big batch and refrig what baby won't eat at that meal.
My baby is now almost 2 and I have a 4yo, 7yo and 10yo and I do the same thing to make 'porridge'. I blend barley, brown rice and millet and follow the above cooking directions. I serve it with milk and agave nectar or honey over it. A nice hearty breakfast that they love.

I would make the flour then cook it with some water on the stove. I never measured but I think I at least doubled the water. Then when it is cooked you can thin it down with more water or breastmilk. I did this with oats, barley, and rice. Worked well for us. Annette |

1/4 cup brown rice ground in the blender to a fine powder (about 3 minutes) added to 1 cup boiling water. Once powder is added, turn heat down to lowest setting. Cook, covered, for 10 minutes, whisking often to prevent scorching.
My baby loves this cereal! You have to really thin it out though.
You can also take cooked rice (without the seasonings or butter) and add equal part liquid in the blender. Blend until smooth. |

Since rice freezes well -- could I cook up a bunch, freeze it in individual zip lock bags?
I don't have a grinder, but I'm thinking perhaps I could put the rice and water in the food processor until smooth. Wow -- I never would have thought to ask about rice cereal. But this would seem to be better then the boxed.
THANKS for the idea.
