As I was looking for a new muffin recipe in my Sue Gregg cookbook, the bran muffin recipe caught my eye. So oatbran went on my grocery list. However, at the grocery store all I could find is the All Bran cereal and some oatbran hot cereal--both with lots of sugar I might add. Is this what these recipes call for? What am I looking for?

You should be able to find Oat Bran hot cereal with out added sugar.
It is alot like Cream of Wheat & Cream of Rice.
It should not have any added sugar.
Oats may(?) have natural sugar? Not really sure.
That maybe the sugar content that you see.

Melody,
The bos I was looking at had oatbran cereal in it (not the individual packages) and it did have an applesauce recipe for muffins on the back. I believe it was the Hodgens(??) Mill brand???? Is that what I need? Also, what is wheat bran? Thanks for putting up with all my questions!

Oats, Wheat, and other grains are made up of three different parts.
The bran, the germ and the endosperm.
The bran is the outter covering of the grain and contains the fiber.
The germ is the middle or inner part of the grain and is VERY rich in vitamins.
The endosperm is the (meat) between the bran and the germ it does have some nutrients.
White flour is made from the endosperm ONLY.
Whole wheat flour contains ALL three parts, thus is healthier.
Also, white flour is bleached with 25 different chemicals and is "enriched" with only 3 of the 28 nutrients dicarded with the bran and the germ.
Hodgens Mills Oat Bran IS what you need for a recipe calling for oat bran.
Hope this info. helps you understand a little better!
