Does anyone have a source for buttermilk powder, I have a basic muffin mix receipe that calls for it, Also I'm wondering if there is a non dairy alternative. This mix makes a big batch (powdered) and then you can ad the extras to make any kind of muffin. If it works out well I will post the receipe. Thanks everyone! ~K |

Powdered buttermilk is in a small canister type container in the baking aisle of the grocery store - usually right by the evaporated, condensed and powdered milk. |

I buy mine right at the local grocery store. It's in the baking goods aisle. You could ask the store manager if you don't see it. Since you're planning to make a large batch of mix that you can draw from, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's such a great time saver to have the powdered buttermilk already in the mix!!! |

Not sure if this would work, but... the substitute for buttermilk is 1T white vinegar mixed in enough milk to make 1 cup. Mix, let set 5 minutes. If you used powdered milk in the recipe, perhaps you could mix about 1/2 the dry mixture with your liquid ingredients, add the required amount of vinegar, then mix the rest of the dry ingredients. ??? Also, I know in most recipes you can use regular milk instead of buttermilk and often the flavor isn't even changed, especially if you're adding other flavorings. There are non-dairy powdered milk substitutes available.

I find it at Walmart with the evaporated milk and sweetend condensed milk. Maybe it's not popular in the part of the country that you live in. It's very easy to find in any grocery store here.
This vinegar mixture will work but if you can get ahold of real butter milk, where you take cream and make butter and use the leftover milk, it is delicious. You can really taste the difference in bisquits. |
