Recipe Book Ideas

I'm looking for ideas on putting together a recipe book. Right now all my recipes are thrown in a drawer in the kitchen.
I was thinking like a 3 ring binder with page protectors that have tabs. Then maybe separate it by main catagories such as Dinner ideas, Lunch ideas, Desserts, Vegetables, etc. I also like for recipes to have pictures on them. So, maybe glue the picture on the page when I write or type the recipe on the page.
Anyone have ideas?

I used to have a photo album for my recipes. Worked great. I would clip recipes from everywhere and just put them in there. You will be smart to have dividers for them so they will be easy to find.

Your idea sounds great, as it is exactly what I did. Page protectors are so nice because they won't get messed up. I have a file in my cabinet named "Recipes to Try", each month we go through it before we get groceries and pick 4 new recipes to try for the month. If it's a keeper, I type it up and add it to my book. I add pictures also. If I don't have one I go online and get one. |

I also did the photo album book idea. I found a photo album that holds 3 4x6 photos per page (6 on a double page) and I transfer my recipes to 4x6 index cards. It works really well, plus its easy to move the recipes if I decide to change their title or so I can file some together. Example, I file my tart pastry recipe with my Chicken Pot Pie recipe so I don't have to look them both up seperately when I go to make my Pot Pie. |

I had thousands of recipes from everywhere, all stuck in page protectors in a notebook. I also had many tried and true recipes in lots of cookbooks that had mental notes (I double the sauce for this; I substitute parmesan for cheddar in that...)
One day I sat down and took all my tried and trues (Maxwell coffeecake, the German pancakes and buttermilk syrup) and pasted them into a word document. I also retyped my favorites from my cookbooks with my adaptations. Now I have about 10 pages of recipes all together. It is so fun to cook when I just pull out my notebook. If I make more changes, or add a new favorite, I just print out a new set. If you can afford the initial time to do this, it really requires very little maintenance. (Try Teri's 30 minutes a day...)
I then took all my clippings and printouts from the computer and put then in one of those envelope folders. When I get ambitious, I cook a new recipe. If it's a go with the family, I type it into my word document. If it's a no-go, I recycle it. |
